Marvelous Marbleized Papers 03/12/2012
We've been having a great time in art with some of our little guys! Last week Preschool 1 & 2 got to make their own marbleized papers. It was really easy! All we do was take some shaving cream, dropped in some food coloring, and gently spread our colors around like "we were buttering our toast"--as Ms. Nicky says! Finally, we pressed the paper down into the foam, lifted it up, and squeegeed off the excess foam. Check out the results! Add Comment Printmaking & Snowy Salt Painting! 12/12/2011
Things have been super busy in the Art Room lately! Students from Preschool through Kindergarten have been learning about printmaking recently. We learned that "monoprinting" is a technique in which an artist (like us!) paints a picture or design and then presses paper onto the wet image. The result is a single one of a kind print, that can not be duplicated! Older students also did block printing by drawing an image into sheets of styrofoam, covering the styrofoam image in ink, and them stamping the image onto peper. Then, last week, we got ready for winter by making some snowy salt paintings. We mixed Epsom salt with warm water to create a snow effect to brush over some winter pictures we created. Keep your eyes peeled for our work in the hallways! Introducing: Georgia O'Keeffe! 11/18/2011
![]() "Two Calla Lilies On Pink", 1928 This week in art, students in Private Kindergarten and K Surround were introduced to Georgia O'Keeffe, an American artist who lived from 1887-1986. Ms. O'Keeffe is probably best known for her SUPER CLOSE paintings of flowers and other objects found in nature. To get ready for this lesson, the kids looked at Ms. O'Keeffe's work and discussed how she was able to make such "super close" art, and how we could make some of our own. We then got out our magnifying glasses and examined leaves and other natural objects under the lenses. Finally, we used the viusal information we had discovered to create our own "super close" drawings! Wait til you see how it came out! Messy... Magnificent... Mud! 11/10/2011
This month Preschoolers at BASE are learning all about farms and the animals that you can find on them. On Wednesday the Lions in Preschool II asked for Ms. Nicky's help to create something messy and awesome for the pigs they made for their upstairs bulletin board. What could be more messy and awesome than MUD, right? The kids had a great time mixing paint and oatmeal and a little bit of water together to create their muddy masterpiece! As you can see from the slideshow below, they had a great time! Introducing: Paul Klee! 11/09/2011
![]() "Esel" by Paul Klee, 1925 This week in art, students in K-Surround and Private Kindergarten were introduced to the artist Paul Klee. Paul Klee was born in Switzerland in 1879 but was considered both a German and Swiss artist during his lifetime. At the beginning of class, students looked at a reproduction of Klee's 1925 piece called "Esel". What do you think an "esel" is? The students guessed all kinds of things... A man? A pig? A horse? We also asked ourselves, if it was an animal, why was the esel standing on two legs? What kinds of other animals stand on two legs? Students then learned that the word "esel" is German for "donkey" and we then moved on to examine the types of lines and drawing style of Mr. Klee. What kinds of animals can we make in this style? Turns out, we could make ALL KINDS of animals in this style! The kids assembled tagboard that had been cut into various abstract shapes and used it to trace animal shapes onto their own papers, trying to imitate Mr. Klee's crazy lines.
